The Buy Nothing Day is on Saturday. Cryptic is celebrating the holiday by letting you play Champions Online for free this weekend.

Basically, you have these options:

Celebrate Buy Nothing Day and have a great time in a world of super heroes
Protest against the holiday by wasting your time in crowded cold rainy streets to buy some stuff and get the H1N1 flu for free

The choice is easy, even for a die-hard capitalist like me.

Champions Online and the future of costume editing

One thing that I love with capitalism is the free competition. Developers get incentive to create new amazing features that the costumers enjoy. Eventually, competitors might catch up and deliver a similar experience, carefully adopted to their own framework.

During the Halloween, I was offered a few days to try out Champions Online, which is a superhero themed MMO and a promising competitor to City of Heroes. The games have slightly different audiences, and I believe both games will co-exist for several years, inspiring each other to break the limits.

One of the most impressing things in Champions Online is the costume editor. You are finally able to create female bodybuilders, and the number of body sliders is amazing. Here are some pics of my fbb character Rubella.

Operative Acarina, Negative Reaction, ChopSue, Trisenox, Dr Malifas and Mechnomancer fought and defeated the awakened Eye of the Leviathan in the Temple of the Waters deep beneath Sharkhead Isle yesterday. We made it in 56 minutes.

This post is completely unrelated to City of Villains, it’s regarding a web offender trying to trick me into installing malware masked as an update to Flash Player.

I was sent a link to a fake youtube-like site, http://www.facebook.com/l/127ca;bit.ly/dfjqi, that told me that I need to upgrade my Flash player. Filename is setup.exe, size is around 40k, file icon reminds of MSN messenger and according to file information, the original name is “HpqUnSet.exe”.

The virulence is only recognized by four out of 40 anti-virus programs, and it is known as W32/Koobface.G.gen!Eldorado and Win32.HLLW.Facebook.358. The malware file as well as the fake youtube site is hosted on the IP address 66.57.218.131

Last chance for Apocalypse!

It’s the last chance to get the rewards and badges associated with the 2009 Halloween event. I will assemble an 11th hour team on Union Server tonight at 8pm UK time or 9pm Swedish time. Drop a tell to Lenina on Union Server (Villain side) to join. It’s not the Trick or Treat thingy, it’s the Deadly Apocalypse, also known as the Banners.

Rules:

Teamleader is me, or someone who know how do do it.
At least one on each Banner, two on each if we’re full team
Follow team leaders direction, for example “go to Mayhem Banner”
If you die and the team is 5-7 members, ask for backup
Never ever leave a Banner if you’re soloing it (quick trips to hospital or SG base in case of defeat is ok)
Prepare yourself with inspirations if you need.
Tell the team at least five minutes ahead if you plan to leave.
Tell the team if you have an elevated risk of sudden afk due to bad connection, weak hardware, phone calls etc
If you fail and retry in another zone, keep to the same banner unless you get other directions.

Power customization with Issue 16

The upcoming Issue 16 has great power customization. You can change color and blending mode for many powers, and even replace the animations of fighting style power sets, like martial arts and super strength.
